Make Your Mark: Claudia and Marco
In March 2020, Claudia was miles from home in Oaxaca, living in Mexico City, afraid to have her baby in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. She had come in search of work, and now the world felt like it was shutting down around her.
After her son, Marco, was born, the hospital staff told her she needed to leave as soon as possible to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. She was grateful for their care but panicked when they told her to "come back when it's safer" to get his Birth Certificate. How could she, a new mother in an unfamiliar city, get her son's papers if she was told to leave?
By the time the risk from the disease was lower, Claudia had moved across the country to Baja California for a new job. She was determined to build a better life for their family.
While the work was better, the distance made it nearly impossible to go back to Mexico City to resolve Marco’s paperwork. Without that, he couldn't attend school reliably, see a doctor, or one day get a job that could lift him out of poverty.
Her son’s future was uncertain, and she feared that he would be invisible to his rights because of a piece of paper. The injustice was unbearable. She knew she had to do something.
That's when Claudia reached out to Inalienable. We worked with her to navigate the complex bureaucracy and cut through the red tape. We helped her make sure Marco’s birth was legally registered, securing his right to a future.
We cheered together, watching Marco Make His Mark.
